Black and white close up profile of a male lion, resting. The lion species belongs to the family Felidae and is a member of the genus Panthera. Adult male lions have a prominent mane with a lifespan of 10-14 years. It is a carnivore and adults can weigh up to 190 kg (male) or 130 kg (female). The male can reach a height of 1.2 m, while the female can be as high as 1.1 m at the shoulder. This hunter can reach a maximum speed of 80 km/h, in short bursts. Lions are social animals that form groups called prides.Their success in the animal kingdom is in part due to their sophisticated fangs - the four largest teeth can reach up to 7 centimetres in length.
